English and Literacy

Language is a tool for thinking. Competency in reading, writing, talking and listening enables pupils to become effective contributors in school and responsible, valued citizens in society. In English, we aim to provide challenging and motivating courses which meet the needs of all of our pupils and enable every pupil to achieve his/her potential. Achievement is not just measured in academic terms- reflected by success in public examinations- but in social and personal terms too. We encourage collaborative learning with the aim of developing thoughtful, supportive individuals capable of taking responsibility for their own learning.

Our definition of text is wide and pupils study the media in all year groups. Pupils are encouraged to use ICT where appropriate. Above all, we aim to promote our students' interest in and enjoyment of all aspects of English. To this end, we value our strong links with the school library and offer a wide range of enrichment activities including drama and reading groups, a writing club, a debating club, theatre trips, court visits and mini trials, a residential creative writing course for Advanced Higher students and author visits. Our pupils' writing is published in classrooms, in anthologies, in 'Teen Titles' and in national newspapers.
